Reason for renaming

[edit]

What was the motive for the 2008 renaming? My first instinct was that the rejection of a name introduced by the Soviets is a positive reform, but the decision to chose a fairly neutral name, rather than to return to a commemoration of the Decembrists, could also be construed as a rejection by Putin's Russian state of the idea of moderate anti-authoritarian reform. Was it ever named "Senate Square" before 2008?

[edit]

The article says "On July 29, 2008, the square was renamed back to Senate Square." However, the article does not indicate that the square was ever named "Senate Square" at any time in history before 2008. Please explain this. Mksword (talk) 03:30, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
